Big Data BI

Meet Max

This is Max.

Max is a Big Data guru. NoSQL, Hadoop, Map Reduce. If it stores data, he’s an expert at it. If Max had his way, he’d spend all day, every day designing and coding his storage solutions.

There’s just one problem…

Meet Molly

This is Molly.

Molly is a business superstar. She’s always one step ahead of her competition and has a plan for how her company is going to win.

The key to Molly’s plan? The ability to monitor her data, report on trends, and access the data in real time. Sounds easy, right?

There’s just one problem…

NoSQL & Hadoop

Remember Max? In order to adequately store the company’s massive amounts of data and to be as developmentally flexible as possible, Max has created solutions that utilize NoSQL and Hadoop. Very cutting edge.

On Monday, Molly meets with Max to request a series of charts and reports that will help her achieve lofty goals for the company.

The Request

Both Max and Molly assume that this request can be addressed fairly quickly. Bad assumption. As Max starts work on the reports, he realizes that there is no simple way to pull the needed data out of his data stores.

He suggests to Molly that they purchase an ETL tool to extract the report data, a MySQL database to store the data, and a BI toolset to generate the needed reports.

The Problem

Molly isn’t thrilled with this solution. After discussing with Max, they determine that the solution will be expensive, slow, and won’t give Molly the ability to build reports in an Ad Hoc manner. Max goes back to the drawing board.

Max determines that he could write some custom programs to pull the data to feed the reports. It doesn’t really address the concerns about slowness or ad hoc access, but at least the costs are lower. That is, until Molly reminds Max that his time costs the company money and that he’d be miserable having to constantly work on reporting extracts that take him away from what he really loves doing. If only there were a single tool that could solve their problem. Luckily, Max has an epiphany.

The Solution

Max has been a fan of LucidDB, an open source column store database built for BI, for some time. He remembers that LucidDB’s sponsoring company, Dynamo Business Intelligence, has recently come out with a packaged solution for BI on big data.

On Tuesday morning, Max quickly and easily downloads an evaluation copy of Dynamo BI, installs it in his environment, and schedules it to start the data pulls.

A Miracle!

On Wednesday morning, Max comes in to a miracle. Dynamo BI has loaded up the data he needs for his reporting and is returning results 10 times faster than he gets with MySQL.

He rushes to Molly’s office to show her what he’s got.

A Happy Ending

Molly figures it’s too good to be true. They’ve found a solution that is easily installed and managed, returns lightning fast results, integrates super easy with BI tools for easy building of reports and charts, and allows for ad hoc access to data in their NoSQL and Hadoop data stores.

They’ve found a solution that meets all of their needs without breaking the bank. Max is able to go back to doing what he loves (coding) and Molly has the tools she needs to beat the competition.

Psst. You.

Yes, you. The one who thinks this doesn’t apply to your situation because you use some regular relational databases, or flat files, or SalesForce.com, or another cloud-based application.

Guess what? Dynamo BI handles all of those as well. If it stores data, we can access it. Contact us so that we can tell you how.
